Changing City: Wait continues for Phase 2 of Uran-Kharkopar railway line ‘ready for commercial operations’

One of the most delayed projects of the Central Railway, the work on the Uran-Kharkopar line was started in 1996-97.

The second phase of the Uran-Kharkopar fourth line, despite being ready for commercial operations according to officials, has not been opened to the public. The authorities are alleged to be waiting for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s date for the inauguration of the line, where construction was started 27 years ago.

Total length of the Belapur-Uran line is 26.7 km and the project is being executed in two phases.

Two phases

The first phase, 12.4 km between Nerul/Belapur and Kharkopar, was opened to passengers in November 2018.

The remaining 14.3 km is awaiting inauguration.

Work started in 1996-97.

Number of stations in Phase 2: Five (Gavanpada, Ranjanpada, Navha Sheva, Dronagiri and Uran).

Benefits

It provides direct connectivity from Island City to Navi Mumbai–CSMT to Uran.

Travel time will be 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Challenges

Due to opposition from local villagers, the project work was delayed in several areas, missing several deadlines.

“The clearance of the Commissioner of Railway Safety has been obtained. However, some minor work remains which will be completed soon. This line we are hopeful to commission soon..,” said Dr Shivraj Manaspure, chief public relations officer of the Central Railway.
